World War II ended more than sixty years ago. Its veterans are now as old as their World War I predecessors I remember from Armistice Day assemblies designed to hold our young minds still on the fact that these conflicts were real. They involved sacrifice, huge loss, and human triumph over a seemingly insurmountable enemy. But it was this second War to End All Wars that held the most horrific of secrets, revealed as Allied troops liberated German concentration camps. The secret was the Holocaust, a measured, intentional plan to destroy the people deemed unworthy for inclusion in Hitler's definition of a perfect world. If the British had not been able to hold off a steady flow of German air raids, if thousands of ordinary people had not hidden their Jewish friends and neighbors, and if the United States had not entered the war, the world would surely be a different place today. The simple fact is that Hitler most likely would have succeeded, and we would not be safe.

We would would know what the people of Darer feel tonight.

Darer is located in the Western section of the African nation Sudan. African Muslims living in this region are facing annihilation by pro-government troops and Arab militias. "Ethnic cleansing," a term with which we have become all too familiar in recent years, is being used again to describe this first genocide of the twenty-first century. People driven from their homes and off their land are now being stalked, then raped and murdered by their tormentors each night as they try to gather wood for campfires to cook food for their children, the ones who escaped with their lives. Their siblings were not all so fortunate. Between 200,000 and 400,000 people are already dead. Those camped on the border of neighboring Chad also face the soon-to-arrive rainy season. Their journey is far from over, and home is only a distant memory.

The rallying cry since those World War Ii death camps were discovered has been two fold: "If we had known we would have done something," and, "Never again."

We now know, and we must act. As ordinary citizens, as people of faith living in a country that claims a moral stand on individual rights, we must do more than was done for the people of Germany, the people of Cambodia, and the people of Rwanda. We must act before this time of mass killing escalates further. We must act before this slaughter becomes a distant, irreparable memory. We must "remember the days of old, consider the years long past; ask your father, and he will inform you; your elders, and they will tell you (Deuteronomy 3:27)." We must remember, and we must take these memories and be empowered by them, outraged by them, and we must act. We must act, out of faith in God, and love for our sisters and brothers who need us.

"Stop Genocide" rallies were held across our nation this past Sunday, April 30, urging the Bush administration to take stronger action to end the violence in Sudan's Darer region. Thousands of people converged on Washington to add their support. The rallies have passed, but the need has not. We can still let President Bush, who clearly stated that another genocide would not occur on his watch, know that we want to help the Sudanese people who are suffering. We can tell our friends, notify our congresswomen and men, our senators and let the White House itself know that what is happening in Africa is wrong, and that it must stop.

We see all too clearly the hatred that has bred this violence, but let us also "see what love the father has given us that we should be called children of God, and that is what we are (I John 3:1)." Let us see this love, and act on it.

Researcher, Nancy Adler conducted a monumental study in the mid 1980s to address myths about women and international business. Her study investigated if commonly held myths about women in international business were true including: women are not interested in International business, women were not willing to travel overseas for a variety of reasons namely family responsibilities and women would not be viewed as credible in overseas business due to the local perception of women. Her study results revealed that many of these false perceptions were indeed myths often held by male managers and HR personnel, and that women were interested and willing to conduct business overseas.

Today many of these same myths still exist despite the dramatic increase of women in business and women owned businesses and women traveling overseas.

Here are some facts published by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) (www.dol.gov), The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) (www.nawbo.org), and the Small Business Administration (SBA) (www.sba.gov), on women in the work force:

Women account for over 46% of the work force in America and this is expected to increase to 48% by the year 2005.

Women comprised 43% of employees in American executive, administrative, and managerial occupations in 1995 and this number is growing.

Businesses owned by women number 8 million in the U.S., and they employ one out of every four workers. They are growing at double the rate of all businesses.

33% of women business owners report that they exported in their first or second year of operation and the majority reported that they were successful on their first transaction.

In 1998 over 23 million Americans traveled overseas and the primary areas of travel were Europe, Asia, Japan and Latin America.

It is no longer just a rumor that women have become major players in the U.S. workforce and in the global business environment. More and more women are traveling overseas to conduct business for their corporations or for their own business ventures.

Despite these significant advances of women in International business we still find commercial guidebooks that suggest that women should not be in International business. Most books in this genre were written by men and either do not address womens particular issues in international business or, worse, they suggest that women should not even be sent on foreign business assignments due to role differences which these men perceive to be unconquerable obstacles. In contrast, my own research (1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998) indicates that women can and are successful in international business, despite the variety of viewpoints they encounter around the world. Specifically, my research has demonstrated that establishing credibility during the initial stages of business is one area that businesswomen find critical to their success.

Establishing Your Credibility

For men, credibility is often derived from their gender and their status in the company. For women, credibility is more often derived from their individual skills. Women report that they often have to work extra hard to establish credibility because of their gender.

Some women explain:

When I conduct business in most countries I am consciously aware that my male colleagues have more credibility than I do, just because of gender differences. In most countries women are not expected to have significant positions of authority, so I am frequently viewed in the same way. I am first assumed to be an administrator, not the decision-maker in the group, whereas my male colleague is first viewed as the manager or decision-maker. I feel I have to work doubly hard to establish my credibility before I can effectively conduct business and Im aware that I need to do this immediately so that the business can start. (Chicago)

When I travel outside the U.S. for the corporate office, I am viewed as foreign first, and female second. However, I feel I am still met with some degree of skepticism as to what my role is and how much authority I have for the corporate office. Due to this, I take extra steps to make sure that the proper introductions are made in advance to limit concerns that men might have about my credibility. (Los Angeles)

As a woman business owner I realize that I am not the norm in many countries. Therefore I have to develop methods by which to establish my self and my company as credible for my foreign business associates. This requires preparation and advance communication about my firm, our success and our viability -- perhaps more than is required for men who run their own firms. (New York)

Here are some pointers for establishing credibility:

Be visible. Attend and host meetings between your company and your international counterparts whenever possible. International travel is often associated with decision-makers in a firm, so being present adds to your credibility.

Introductions are important, particularly for women. If you are doing business with a firm for the first time, have yourself introduced by a higher-ranking person in your company who already knows the people with whom you will be dealing.

If you cannot have someone introduce you, ask a higher-ranking person in your company to send a fax or written correspondence in advance, outlining your title, responsibilities and background.

Make sure your business card indicates a distinctive title such as Manager or Director so that your position can be clearly understood. If there is any doubt about your title, it may be automatically assumed that you have a lesser role than other members on your team.

Some women wear a school ring or a graduate school pendant to subtly advertise their background. Others wear corporate pins designating tenure, thus demonstrating their level of experience.

In general, foreigners will often look and respond more to the men on your team than the women. This is because there are fewer women in executive positions outside of the U.S. Prepare for this by advising your colleagues of tactics that will help you and the other female members, including making seating arrangements that will place you in a position of authority.

If someone appears confused about your name and rank, offer him another business card, even if you have already given him one. This is a subtle way of reinforcing your title and ensuring acknowledgment of your participation as an active member at the meeting

Women should lead business discussions where possible. If there is only one woman and everyone is of equal rank, let the woman take the lead to help establish her credibility.

A female team leader may experience a problem establishing her credibility unless team members defer to her as the authority figure on the team. American men need to be aware that their tendency to jump in and answer questions, especially when a woman is speaking, undermines her authority and the teams effectiveness. Women should advise team members not to answer questions directed to her and to otherwise defer to her whenever appropriate. A good response when asked a question that should be directed to a female colleague is: Jane is the best person to answer that question.

Be professional. Present yourself in a sincere, confident, professional manner, both in appearance and speech, to create a good first impression. Be yourself. Do not come on too strong, but dont defer when it is appropriate for you to respond. Deferring to age and position is, however, always acceptable for both sexes.

Be aware of womens roles in other countries. If you understand where women are in their own corporate environment it will give you insight into how the culture may perceive you.

The Role of the Manager

Managers can be very effective in international business by helping to enhance their teams credibility. The manager can introduce the staff members by title and outline their areas of expertise, act as moderator to refer questions to the appropriate team member, and highlight the staffs achievements.

In particular, managers can help in the following ways:

It is important that all team members, including management, understand their roles at the meeting and, more importantly, that they do not act out of role. If one of your colleagues is acting out of role, call for a break to explain how the group loses effectiveness when it is not cohesive.

As a woman, you should advise management that your personal credibility may be jeopardized if your role is undermined, and that this could hinder the success of the team at any follow-up meetings.

Managers can help enhance the credibility of female teammates by reinforcing their authority during the meeting. For example, if a woman is not receiving the appropriate respect, the manager may once again bring attention to her role and authority.

Despite commonly held myths about women in International businesswomen are traveling and conducting business internationally in increased numbers and they are successful in their business dealings. Establishing credibility in advance is one of the key areas where women can do to ensure her business success.

With the holidays approaching, it is time to think about visiting with friends, participating in family gatherings and creating special gifts for our loved ones. The memories of Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas gift giving remind us of the special times in our lives when we catch up on family news and visit with old friends.

With the colder weather, shorter days and lots of time spent indoors, now is the time to start your scrapbooking project. What better way is there to spend a rainy day than to dig out all those old photos, children's artwork and long kept treasures from vacations, birthdays and special occasions and begin working on a scrapbook. Scrapbooks make great gifts and also provide a way for us to share our life with others. Of course, some of us have to dig pretty far down to find these things which may have been kept in several different boxes and placed throughout the house over the years.

Where do you begin? Well, the first step is to look through all the things you have collected over time and decide what you want to keep. Next, decide what theme to make your scrapbook pages about. What is the overall purpose of the project? Who is it for? Or perhaps you would like to make several scrapbooks for various family members. The answers to these questions will help you select an appropriate theme for your creative endeavor.

Grandmother would love a scrapbook with a collection of photos of the grandchildren; perhaps creating a book with each child as the theme. Include a few of their art projects and cute photos for each scrapbook. Let each child be involved in the project, selecting their favorite color for the background. Ask them to pick out their own embellishments, paper, rubber stamps, and help create the overall design of the scrapbook. Your sister or brother would love a scrapbook with all the latest pictures of each child, collage-style. Try adding lot's of text to your scrapbook and let each child help in composing the words in their own handwriting.

Friends would love a small scrapbook of current photos of your spouse, children, etc. It is best to arrange the photos in chronological order. Also, try including some pictures of past adventures you have shared with them. If you were high school or college pals, find some pictures of your school years and make a collage using the best photos and add some school memorabilia (if you have any) to your scrapbook.

The use of dark colored backgrounds makes a nice backdrop for photos. Experiment with photo editing software for your digital photos and print out photos on photo paper. Remember to use acid-free and lignin free paper for long lasting prints.

Creating scrapbooks on rainy or snowy days is a great way to pass the time and an enjoyable experience for the entire family.

Chemistry and biology students at Atlanta Schools North Atlanta High School put their lab skills into action for a Court TV film crew on April 11. As part of the Forensics in the Classroom, program, students learned how to collect and analyze evidence of a crime scene. They werent flying blind. Instead, they had help from a range of criminal investigation experts, beginning with the head of their own science department, Dr. Cadence Spearman. In addition to Dr. Spearman, students interacted with Court TV host Rachelle Savoia, Police Lt. H. Cotton Tukes, forensic investigators from the Fulton County Police Department, and a criminal science instructor from Bauder College.

The staged crime took place in the schools cafeteria and involved acts of vandalism and a cut gas line. Students worked through the crime scene, learning the proper procedures for collecting evidence. The evidence that they collected, including hair fibers, stomach contents, and blood makeup, was then analyzed in the school lab.

The exercise demonstrated a new standards - based forensics curriculum developed by Court TV, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and the National Science Teachers Association. The program combines standard high school lab techniques with a mystery solving element.

Students at North Atlanta High School participated in Unit Four of the Forensics in the Classroom Curriculum. Called The Cafeteria Caper, the crime they investigated involved a trashed high school cafeteria that might be linked to an underground club. The lab techniques required for the investigation included an enzyme test and the analysis of hair, blood, and DNA all within their own school laboratory.

To begin the exercise, students were given handouts that explained the background information of the crime that they would be investigating. They are also given several handouts explaining the nature of forensic investigation and how forensic techniques are used to solve crimes.

Students examine a range of evidence. Some of it comes from the crime scene itself, but students also have access to a mock website that details the practices of the underground club they are investigating. The website provides them with additional information for the physical evidence that they collected, helping them to match the evidence with suspects from the website.

The Forensics in the Classroom Curriculum provided detailed lab guides for conducting the necessary experiments. After they had reached their conclusions, they were instructed how to fill out Crime Lab Reports documenting their evidence.

The Cafeteria Caper addressed five of the national forensics curriculum standards. These included:

Developing an understanding of the Cell (including enzyme function, organic molecules and indicators)
Developing an understanding of the Molecular Basis of Heredity (including chromosomes, DNA and genetic inheritance
Understanding and performing scientific inquiry
Analyzing and synthesizing several pieces of data to draw a conclusion
Developing an understanding of science and technology

The Forensics in the Classroom Curriculum consists of five units designed along the same lines as the Cafeteria Caper. With names such as Its Magic, The Celebration, The Car That Swims, and Renters Beware, each unit promises a unique story line and a different set of laboratory techniques to be used.
